Tether Launches MDK, an Open Infrastructure Layer for Bitcoin Mining

27 April 2026Tether, the largest company in the digital asset industry, today launched Mining Development Kit (MDK), an open-source, full-stack development framework that gives Bitcoin mining operators and developers unified control over their entire infrastructure stack.

With its open modular architecture and agnostic interfaces, MDK pairs a JavaScript backend SDK with a React UI component library to provide an open alternative to the closed, proprietary systems that have fragmented mining operations for years. This enables anyone, from home miners to gigawatt-scale facilities, to monitor, control, and build on their infrastructure without vendor lock-in.

As mining operations scale across energy systems, data centers, and distributed sites, the lack of standardized infrastructure has become a critical bottleneck. Proprietary tools and vendor lock-in make it difficult and expensive to operate across fragmented and siloed systems. This fragmentation limits scalability, reduces interoperability, and constrains the development of advanced applications across the mining stack.

MDK replaces that fragmented stack with a single, open framework, introducing a new approach to mining by relieving operators of the choice between limited transparency and the high operational costs associated with switching vendors. A unified control layer pulls from persistent storage across every connected device, giving operators full visibility into their infrastructure and a clean foundation for automation while powering automated agents to optimize the mining process.

MDK introduces a capability-based architecture in which devices expose standardized functions and independent modules (“workers”) interact with them, all coordinated by a central orchestration layer. This allows new hardware, services, and integrations to be added without modifying the core system.

Designed for the evolving mining landscape, MDK can adapt to every operational scale without rebuilding the underlying architecture. To broaden mining access for enterprises and emerging markets, the framework is agnostic to any hardware or vendors and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Furthermore, it can be deployed across multiple models, with controlled scaling, minimal operational overload, and easy onboarding.

At any scale, MDK enables the rapid development of operational dashboards, automated workflows, pool management tools, and analytics pipelines. For individual miners and independent operators, it offers greater control and oversight over multiple miners across locations. For industrial-scale mining, it enables coordinated hardware management, fault tolerance, and AI-driven optimization across large-scale operations.

“Infrastructure is at the core of any mining operation. MDK is creating the blueprint for a universally compatible mining infrastructure with unprecedented levels of programmability and scalability. From serving home miners to large enterprises, it has always been our mission at Tether to empower all those who mine Bitcoin with sovereignty and transparency,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “The next generation of mining will be centered around automation and optimization, and MDK will serve as the backbone driving this shift towards autonomous agents and workflows.”

MDK consists of two stacked layers that can be executed independently: MDK Core and the UI Development Kit. MDK Core is the open-source SDK that provides customizability, flexibility, and real-time device control. The UI Development Kit provides standardized components to build dashboards and applications, enabling modular, consistent, and scalable user interfaces across mining operations. Together, MDK eliminates the limitations and complexities of traditional Bitcoin mining, empowering self-sovereignty through full control of the stack, hardware, and data.

This follows Tether’s open-sourcing of its Mining OS (MOS), a production-grade mining operating system that coordinates hardware, energy, and operational data within a unified system. The launch of MOS was a testament to Tether’s determination to strengthen the resilience of the Bitcoin Network while removing the need to rely on external centralized providers. At the same time, MDK extends this vision by providing the open development framework on which MOS and other mining applications can be built.
