Tether to Wind Down USD₮ Support for Five Legacy Blockchains as Part of Strategic Infrastructure Review

Omni, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand Support to Cease on September 1, 2025

11 July, 2025 — Tether, the largest company in the digital asset ecosystem, today announced an update on its plan to discontinue USD₮ redemptions and freeze remaining tokens on five legacy blockchains — Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand — effective September 1, 2025. The move is part of a broader effort to optimize infrastructure, align with community usage trends, and refocus resources toward high-utility, actively developed blockchains.

Tether’s decision follows a comprehensive review of blockchain usage data, market demand, and feedback from community stakeholders and infrastructure partners. While these networks played a foundational role in Tether’s early growth, the volume of USD₮ circulating on them has declined significantly over the past two years.

“As the digital asset ecosystem evolves, Tether remains committed to adapting alongside it,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “Sunsetting support for these legacy chains allows us to focus on platforms that offer greater scalability, developer activity, and community engagement — all key components for driving the next wave of stablecoin adoption.”

The decision reflects Tether’s strategic pivot toward expanding support for Layer 2 networks (e.g., Lightning Network) and other emerging blockchains that offer improved interoperability, speed, and ecosystem growth. By reallocating resources from underutilized blockchains, Tether is doubling down on platforms that better serve its global user base.

Tether customers holding USD₮ on Omni, Kusama, SLP, EOS, and Algorand should redeem their holdings as soon as possible or, if desired, request an issuance of USD₮ on a supported blockchain, in accordance with our Terms of Service.  Holders who are not customers may seek to migrate their USD₮ holdings to a supported blockchain through an available service provider in accordance with the terms of those providers.

Tether continues to explore collaborations and integrations with innovative blockchain ecosystems to broaden the accessibility and utility of USD₮. This includes expanding support for scalable Layer 2 networks and DeFi-native chains where user activity and developer engagement are robust.
